After giving The Bean a choice between birds or dinosaurs we headed to the National Dinosaur Museum. We have been a bit spoilt having already visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum in the badlands of Alberta so we weren’t expecting anything amazing, but it wasn’t too bad and it was definitely kid-friendly. Just not for our kid.
All was fine in the front garden of the museum—lots of fibreglass dinosaurs to explore and lots of squeals of excitement. We were onto a winner! That was until we walked into the exhibit, paid our entry fee, and The Bean came face to face with a human sized ‘baby dinosaur’ clunkily popping its head up and down out of an egg and shrieking. It served to terrify her but we’d paid our entry fee, so we persisted all the way through the museum hoping that she would start to enjoy herself and ignore the exhibits that moved and shrieked. That didn’t happen.
Eventually, along with hordes of other parents carrying tearful toddlers we ended up at the gift shop where we proceeded to buy The Bean anything dinosaur related that she wanted in the hope that she will one day make peace with the prehistoric beasts and alleviate any fears that we may have scarred her for life. (I once thought I had scarred her for life with a Jack-in-the-box but that seems to have turned out ok…)
After pulling herself together over a babycino we managed to have a nice wander around the nearby village shops and it seems that she may have forgiven us for the torturous dinosaur experience. We'll try again next year...
