Light up my life

It appears that the universe read my recent post and decided to step in and give me a swift kick up the rear to keep me moving forward. Thanks universe.

I spoke to my husband about my grand plan to waste plenty of time immersed in photography this year. Oh, how I have missed having the time to just mess about with a camera…

Darling husband wholeheartedly agreed that I should take time to myself whenever I can to pursue my hobby, so I set about making a plan for that week. I contacted a friend and offered a photo session in exchange for her son as a subject (practice for me, and hopefully a few nice images for her). After a challenging start (Little Man was not in the mood) he warmed up, we had some fun at the park, and we did—thankfully—end up with some lovely shots for mum and dad.

That very night, out of the blue, a friend contacted me asking if I would be happy to practice on a wannabe teenage model. Great! Another weekly project on the cards. Shortly afterwards I had another out-of-the-blue request from a friend, this time to take photos of a belly dancing troupe at an upcoming festival. Fun!

I expect that the coming year will be spent learning to ‘see the light’ so to speak. With no budget (or desire…) for studio lighting, but with a speedlite and abundant natural light at my disposal, the universe will no doubt guide me and teach me about the ever-changing light of the seasons. By consciously  ‘opening my eyes’ I have
learnt that midday sun is not necessarily my enemy—rather the shade it provides is my friend. I have also discovered that I have a six minute window of golden summer light that streams indoors of an evening.

Sometimes, the lack of light will be what provides a precious memory.

What a wonderful learning curve I am facing this year!

Something I need to keep in mind: There are no such things as 'good' light and 'bad' light.
